The Shining Jewel/Broken

Poems have a lot of emotions behind them; at least mine do. They can make you feel a sort of empowerment that you might not get anywhere else. The thing is, they are all words coming together as one to make an impact. That's what stories bring, scripts, quotes and lyrics.

I like writing - that much is said. However, writing poems are really difficult for me and I won't make a career out of it. But I used to write them for my Nana growing up all the time and that was the first time someone noticed my "talent" at the age of four. She has kept every single poem, and I'm very grateful for that. I told her I wanted to become a professional writer the other day, and she subtly laughed and told me "Jess, you've always been a writer - the world has been waiting for you to share it." That one line makes me cry every single time. It means a lot to me.

The poems I write now mean something to me. They are hard to explain but I write them either at a really happy time in my life or the other darker extreme of a time that is rather hard for me to get past. Writing has that type of power and today when I found out a very dear family friend finally past away to her battle with cancer, the first thing I did (in a daze of course) was grab a sheet of paper and went on my deck to write a poem.

To be honest it's not even good, but that's okay with me. The paper is almost ruined because of my tears and that is meaningful. That is power right there.

So here is the poem I wrote for Nancy Klekas today and one I wrote for my step-father Greg when his disease was finally becoming visible:

A Shining Jewel
"Dedicated to Nancy Klekas"

I hope you know dear friend,
you were a miracle.
One in a million.
Your smiling face,
was that of a sweet embrace.
The beauty of you,
shined on the inside,
as well as on the out.
Your love melted the pain away.
I just wish the suffering had gone away.
The world has lost a shining jewel,
one of which is rather cruel.
But I shall not fear,
for you'll always be near.
Won't you dear?
You were a gift,
and now the world will shift.
For how will we carry on,
without you to lean on?
You fought the battle hard and wise.
But now it's time to close those eyes.
People come and go they say,
I only wish that you could stay.
Didn't want to say goodbye.
But then again,
it's for a while.
For we will never truly part,
for you shall shine inside my heart.

Broken
"Dedicated to my step-father"

Why do I feel so helpless?
I cannot pick you up when you fall.
Seeing your strength melt away.
Your sadness washes your happiness away.
Wishing I could put your pieces back together.
Fitting them like a puzzle.
Making you whole again.
But they will no longer fit as one,
You are broken.
Will my prayers reach to you in time?
No one can know for sure,
but one thing is certain,
You are broken.
At a time you held your head high.
You were proud.
And you were strong.
The bravest one of all.
But our life as shattered,
You are broken.
Once you held me way up high.
High enough to touch the sky.
You were the glue that kept us going.
Finally we smiled from your touch.
But that happiness is gone now.
The tears have taken its place.
For it will never be the same,
You are broken.
